Mold Prevention 101: Repel the Pests!

mold in pipe leaksMolds are one of the most hated beings that are currently wreaking havoc in a lot of communities across the United States (which is why professional mold exterminators like nymoldpro are pretty important). These pests are capable of doing extensive damage to modern homes and properties, which is why getting rid of them is a major priority. Not only that, they also pose a number of health hazards to human beings and animals. Yes, they were pretty much monumental to the discovery of penicillin, but if they grow undetected in your home, prepare for the pain. Exterminating them is one thing, however, prevention is the key here. Every home is susceptible to having themselves playing host to these horrendous beings,  so with that said, here are some of the things that you should do in order to prevent them from bothering you:

Identify the most susceptible areas in your home

You need to be able to point out the right places on where mold is susceptible to grow and fester. In this regard, you need to check the plumbing. Are the pipes leaking? If so, where? Mold will thrive in damp areas, which makes every place in your house that is exposed to moisture vulnerable to its growth. Aside from the plumbing, you may also want to check the basement (especially if the place where you live in is susceptible to flooding), beneath the roof shingles, attic, bathroom and of course, the kitchen and the surrounding areas.

Dry those areas up

Once you have identified those  areas, it is imperative that you immediately find ways in drying them up. Look for measures on how to stop the pipes from leaking, may it be by wielding it or just by putting a firm adhesive over it. Make sure to cover and repair roofs that are leaking, in order to prevent rainwater from coming in. As for the kitchen, make sure that the cupboards near the sink do not contain wet kitchen paraphernalia. Remember, mold can start infesting an area in 24 – 48 hours, so it is necessary to immediately dry those damp areas up. Aside from the structural growth, mold can also grow on carpets, rags and wet clothes. Before storing them, dry them up thoroughly first.

Proper ventilation and hygiene

Be proactive. Proper ventilation equates a circulation of air that will dry things up, making it impossible for mold to fester. Make sure that simple deeds such as bathing, cooking or doing laundry will not allow infestation. Make sure to have a window stationed in these areas. Better yet, get a humidifier. Also, it has been proven that mold will not grow in areas that have been thoroughly cleaned (and dried out), so be sure to regularly vacuum everything up.

With all that has been said, why is it important to prevent mold? Well, aside from allergic symptoms, a person may experience other complications which will lead to more severe ailments. Remember, as they say, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
