Ways to Clear Up Flood Damage

In order to finally work on flood restoration, you need to be able to clear up floodwater and the debris that came with it. After you have managed to safeguard yourself and your family before, during and after the major deluge, you need to be able to find a way to quickly clear up all the damage so you can be able to go back to your daily life. Though cleaning up is not easy, here are ways in making it bearable and some tips to do it correctly so you will not have encounter the complications that come after it. 

Basement cleanup

In flood restoration and cleanup, clearing up the basement is usually the primary task. To ensure that ONLY WATER and MUD gets inside during the flood, ensure that you have managed to secure, close and bolted all the entrances to the basements, simply because you would not want to stumble upon large debris like branches, fridge doors and most especially dead animals. Manually using buckets to clear the water up is not only not logical but it is also a harrowing task. Instead, avail of a gas powered sump pump that will be able to pump out all the water in no time – this is good as a proactive measure.  If it is not available, use or rent a regular pump instead.

Garden hose method

Though using the shovel during flood restoration and cleanup is a must, garden hoses will be able to lighten  the load, especially if the supply of water is unaffected. In using a shovel, you may be damage the floor, causing scratches and even break the tiles and the epoxy décor. You are also required to bend over while using it, paving the way for back and muscle pain. Using the garden hose is not only hassle free, but it is a lot more easier – with enough pressure, you are able to wipe away all the flood water and the debris that came with it. It is also a tool that makes cleaning easy for wooden furniture and other non-porous materials. 

Other cleanup tips

• Never clean in the dark. Doing so will make you vulnerable to unseen dangers lurking in the dark or beneath the flood water. If you need to do so, do not use candles or anything that can cause a spark, instead, use a batter powered light that can brightly illuminate the area.

• Cleaning flood-stricken clothes will definitely be a tough task. You need to do so meticulously and vigorously. Make sure you rinse them in detergent for quite a while before putting them in a washing machine!

• In the case of cupboards, wooden furniture and other non-porous material in the house, make sure to immediately dry them up by either using a large fan, dehumidifier or do so naturally, by exposing them to sunlight for hours. You have to do so considering that if you don't, mold may start growing.

• Salvaging upholstered furniture may be a lost cause – better let a professional do the job.

• If the task is too much to handle, better hire professional services to do the job.
